Note | Abbott # 25. Buried along with wife Eunice Judd in old cemetary, Farmington. On 22 Mar. 1758 he was serving as 1st Lt. in the French-Indian War and was at the Battle of Ticonderoga.(The marker placed in recent years by the Veterans Administration says he was Sergeant in Capt. Wadsworth's Co.). Served as captain in the Revolutionary War in the 12th Conn. Militia. Between wars he was a builder of considerable note, erecting at least 10 homes (including his own) as well as designing and building the church in Farmington, a photograph of which serves as frontispiece of this book. For more in regard to this church, see Appendix B. An article in the March 1901 issue of "The Farmington Magazine" says that there was in existence at that time some correspondence of circa 1797 between him and the Reverend Joseph Washburn, pastor of the church, in which the captain ably defended himself against the charge that "you have been guilty of a censurable breach of the Laws of Christ's Kingdom in having neglected for many years to attend upon the public worship of God..." etc. This resulted eventually in his excommunication, a not uncommon form of discipline. Two years later, nevertheless, the Rev. Timothy Pitkin, at the time of Judah Woodruff's death, spoke of his earnest piety. His will was dated 26 July 1797, proved 20 Jan. 1800, and the inventory of his estate two months later was $2250.28. |
