He migrated to S.C. before 1824 as a "peddler of wares from a one-horse wagon" and resided Hamburg, S.C. 1825. After the death of his 1st w, he rem to Tuscaloosa, where he kept a book store and played a prominent part in the intellectual development of the community. He was secretary of the Board of Trustees 1841-42, and mayor of the city 1855-68. See Owens' "History of Alabama" Vol. 4, p. 1802; also Milford (Conn.) Land Records Vol. 27, p. 364.
