He arrived in Toledo 2 Apr. 1835 and in 1876 was a member of the firm of Woodruff & Son, proprietors of the Toledo Variety Works. The 1860 census called him a tinner.

March 9, 1857, the following officers of the Toledo Fire Department were elected : Chief Engineer, Wm. Kraus ; First Assistant, I. N. Hathaway; Second Assistant, C. D. Woodruff.

The Fire Department in 1858 was constituted as follows: Chief Engineer, Wm. H. Ketcham ; 1st Assistant, Chauncey D. Woodruff; 2d Assistant, Guido Marx.
