Note | Abbott # 1013 Prepared for Yale at Phillips-Andover, grad Yale B.A. 1857, member Kappa Sigma Epsilon and Psi Upsilon fraternities. Studied law in Litchfield 1857-58 and Harvard Law School 1859, admitted to the bar 1859. He practised law in Litchfield, his s James P. being associated with him after 1894. He served as judge of probate for the Litchfield District 1868-1906 excepting for one year, town treasurer 1860-1906, town clerk 1865-68. He was also assistant clerk of the Superior Court and justice of the peace, a member of the General Assembly 1863, 1865 and 1872, commissioner from Connecticut to the Universal Exposition at Hamburg 1863, state railroad commissioner 1874-97. He was president of the Litchfield Savings Bank 1885-1930, of the First National Bank of Litchfield 1899-1930, of the Litchfield Mutual Fire Insurance Co. beginning 1902 and its treasurer 1885-1902, an organizer of the Colonial Trust Co. of Waterbury, Conn., serving as director and vice president for several years. From 1865-77 he was on the state board of education; was deacon of the Litchfield Congregational Church for 50 years. He was a member of many organizations of varied interests— church, history, archeology, the bar, banking, etc. |
