Note | Abbott # 1287 Born in the section of Orange called "Turkey Hill", he rem at an early age to Milford, where his father had bought a farm, attended district school in Orange, graduated Milford High School 1892. After a few months attendance at a business school, he went into the market gardening business with his father. The winter of 1895-6 he was a locomotive fireman for the NYNH&HRR. He worked as a seed salesman for S.D.Woodruff & Sons of Orange 1900-02, then with his father started their own seed growing and selling operations, which developed into one of the largest vegetable seed firms in the country,— F. H. Woodruff & Sons, Inc. He was its president until his death. Its business was conducted on the farm until the completion of a new warehouse in Milford "Center" in 1912. Always interested in town affairs, he represented Milford in the state legislature 2 terms and was a member of the House Committee on Finance, then in 1924 was elected State Senator from the 14th Dist. and was on the Senate Comm. on Roads, Rivers and Bridges. He was an active member of the Plymouth (Congregational) Church, the Milford Club, the Milford Wheel Club, and I.O.R.M. He was for years a director of the Milford Trust Company. |
