Samuel Woodruff's will, which follows, is to be found in the Hartford Probate Records, N° 6254. In the Name of God Amen: this seventh Day of August. An° Domi 1739, I. Samuel Woodruff Senr & of ye Town of Farmington. In ye County of Hartford & Colony of Conacticott. In New England. Being striken In age Butt present In Compitent helth of Body — and of Sound Dispossing mind and memory, for which I thank God.: Butt Calling to mind the mortallity of my Body, and knowing that it is appoynted unto man once to Dye. Do make & ordain this my Last Will & Testament. that is to say principally and first of all. I Give & Recommend my Soul Into ye hands of God that gave it hoping throroh Riches of Grace In Christ Jesus to Inherit eternal Life: My Body I Committ to ye Earth to be decently Buryed at ye Discresion of my executor hereafter Named. Nothing Doubting Butt at ye General Resurrection I shall Reecieve ye Same again — by ye mighty power of God.—and as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to Bless me In this Life I Give Demise & Dispose of ye same In ye following manor & form that is to say: first I will that all those Debts & Dutys which I Do owe In Right or Concience to any maner of person or persons whatsoever shall be well and truely payd In conveniant time after my deceas by my executor — here after Named — I:t Unto my Son Samuell Woodruff Beside what I have allready Given him I give & Bequeath A. Confirming this alone to be my Last Will & Testament.— In Wittness whereof I have here unto Sett my hand & Seal ye Day & Year first above written. — Samuel Woodruff Sen Signed sealed pronounced (Seal) & Declared by ye Sd Samuel Woodruff to be: his Last Will & Testament in presence of us ye Subscribers:— John Hooker Thomas Smith Elisha Lewis this first Day of March An° Dom 174½ — then Thomas Smith and Elisha Lewis Came personally & made Sollemn oath that they See Samuel Woodruff Senr the above Named Testator Sign & Seal the above written Instrument, and heard him pronounce & Declare ye Same to be his Last Will & Testament and that they then Judged him to be of Sound & Disposing mind & memory, & and that In his presence they, with the other subscribed Witness, all sett too theyer hands as Wittnesses. Abbott #4 He joined the church in Farmington 5 Aug.1691, his wife having already become a member 24 Nov. 1686. On 8 Mar. 1687/88 at a Particular Court in Hartford, under Gov. Andros, Samuel "Woodroofe" was appointed sealer of weights and measures for Farmington. In the land records he was referred to as "shoemaker", and he was the first settler in the southern part of Farmington, later called the South Parish and eventually Southington. According to Timloe's "History of Southington", he built a house on Pudding Hill, half a mile east of the present center.
